DxOMark just released the scores for the iPhone X camera test, and they are good. The iPhone X scored an overall 97 on DxOMark.
While that number is less than what the Pixel 2 scored (98), it's not off by much, and frankly, a difference of 1 point will not be noticeable to us 'common folk'.
It still is a shame that Apple's smartphone couldn't beat it's Android counterpart, but the scores we're seeing here are an indication that companies are pushing smartphone cameras to the limits, and almost every flagship has a camera that won't disappoint.
