In an attempt to make 3D audio creation a simpler and more seamless process, Google has released an immersive audio software development kit called Resonance Audio which enables users to create high-fidelity 3D sound for 360-degree videos, VR, and AR.
Built to work on both mobile and desktop platforms, the Resonance Audio kit is compatible across a variety of platforms ranging from game engines to web. 3D audio remains an important factor for immersion in a virtual world and Google's Resonance Audio kit aims to solve all problems associated with capturing 3D audio.
The kit uses a full-sphere surround sound technique called Ambisonics in combination with head-related transfer functions to create a filter that maps incoming sound moving towards the user's head. The technique is capable of tricking the user's brain into assigning positions and distance to sounds, even when wearing headphones which just have stereo output.
